But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
And Daniel had come to the decision that he would not make himself unclean with the king's food or wine; so he made a request to the captain of the un-sexed servants that he might not make himself unclean.
Daniel determined within himself not to become defiled by the king's menu of rich foods or by the king's wine, so he requested permission from the chief officer not to defile himself. Daniel 1:8
